The best estimate starts with what you actually made.

Use the same yarn, stitch pattern, tools and tension as your blanket. Wash or block your swatch, let it dry, then measure and weigh the whole piece—not just its inner gauge square.

Use any relative proportions. 2 : 1 means ⅔ and ⅓ of the blanket. They are automatically normalised to 100%.

How the estimate works

Blanket area ÷ whole swatch area × dry swatch weight. We add your allowance, then split that weight by the normalised colour proportions.

Ball counts use unrounded weights and round each colour up separately. Displayed weights are rounded; a stripe’s displayed length is a planning guide, not a row count.

This is an estimate, not a guarantee. A larger representative swatch and a precise scale can reduce measurement error. Extra borders, stitch changes, motifs and different yarns need their own calculation. Keep extra swatch yarn separate, and check dye lots when shopping.
